Mr Patrick Wang is Chairman and CEO of Johnson Electric, a global leader in the design and manufacture of micromotors and integrated motor systems. Mr Wang assumed leadership of the company in 1984, growing its annual revenue from US$37 million in that year to
US$1 billion in 2003. In addition to his visionary leadership of Johnson Electric, he is also an active educationalist and a committed advocate of Hong Kong industry.
Johnson Electric was founded in 1959 by Mr Wang Seng Liang and Mrs Wang Koo Yik Chun. Since then, Johnson Electric has grown to be a leader in markets around the world, shipping 2.5 million motors every day to customers throughout the world for use in cars and other vehicles, power tools, home appliances, business equipment, personal products and audio-visual goods.
From its beginnings in a Hong Kong factory, the Group’s principal manufacturing sites today are located in China with other production plants in Italy, Mexico and Thailand. Johnson Electric has engineering centres in Hong Kong, USA, Italy, Japan, China and Germany. It employs 32,000 people worldwide.
Mr Wang joined the Johnson Electric Group in 1972, after graduating from Purdue University with B.Sc. and the M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering. He became a Director of Johnson Electric in 1976, then Managing Director in 1984, when he listed the company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Mr Wang has driven many initiatives aimed at enabling the company to better meet the fast-changing demands posed by globalisation and the advent of new technologies. He led the establishment of worldwide R&D centers located in Italy, Germany, USA, China, Japan and Hong Kong. These have given Johnson Electric a technical edge, and has led to the continued expansion of the applications served by Johnson Electric’s motors.
Mr Wang is also active in the business sector, as an unrelenting advocate of advancement and adherence to the highest principles of management. In the industrial sector, Mr Wang is honorary chairman of both the Hong Kong Critical Components Manufacturers Association and the Hong Kong Electrical Appliances Manufacturers Association. He was formerly a director of the Provisional Hong Kong Science Park Company Limited.
Aside from industry, Mr. Wang’s passion is education. He is a council member of the Chinese University of Hong Kong as well as the University of Hong Kong. He is also a director of the Southeast University in Nanjing, China. He was previously a director of the University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research Limited.
Through his memberships and executive positions at various Hong Kong business and industry organizations, Mr Wang continuously contributes towards promoting Hong Kong as a world class business and industrial centre, particularly with regard to its unique access to China’s rapidly growing industrial base. He is confident that Hong Kong’s entrepreneurial spirit, business acumen and reputation for quality can be tapped to maintain a competitive edge in the years ahead.
