Tam Wing-yiu is the president of Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd. Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd is a tooling supplier of plastic injection moulds. It provides moulds to a number of multinational firms from various industries, including telecommunications, consumer electronics, medical and automotive industries etc. Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd currently has four production plants in Hong Kong, Suzhou, Tianjin and Shenzhen respectively; together, they employ over 670 staff. All the plants are certified to ISO9001:2000 standards.
When Mr Tam established his own moulding plant in Hong Kong in early 1990s, he was already a pioneer in adopting 3-D CAD/CAM technology to the mould industry. In 1997, Nypro Inc, a US-based company, invited Mr Tam to form a joint venture; Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd was thus established. Because of his strong commitment to Hong Kong, Mr Tam continued to operate his production plant in Hong Kong's Tsing Yi Island in spite of the high rental and operating costs. In 2005, Mr Tam led Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd to winning the 'Operation Excellence Grand Award' organised by the Hong Kong Mould & Die Council. Mr Tam's achievement is well recognised by fellow players in the same field.
To cope with the many challenges such as the ever-rising standards of new products as well as shorter product life cycle, Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd continues in the development of advance tooling technology. Mr Tam devotes substantial investment into state-of-the-art CNC machines such as high-speed five axis machines for direct cutting into hardened steel as well as EDM electrodes. Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd also adopts full 3-D mould design, CAM programming and develops own software to produce 3-D mould designs. While fully recognizing R&D and quality assurance are the keys to the company's sustainability, Mr Tam builds a team of more than 50 engineers, designers, programmers and draftsmen working with advanced testing machinery to ensure product precision.
Mr Tam encourages his staff to pursue continuous learning, from languages to latest software applications, design and tooling. Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd is one of a few mould manufacturers in Hong Kong that operates under a Government-funded programme to train engineers. Since 2001, Mr Tam has employed engineering graduates from local universities, for a two-year Engineering Graduate Programme that is recognised by the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers. Mr Tam has also developed an apprenticeship training scheme for Nypro Tool Hong Kong Ltd to train up young engineers for the industry.
