Ricky

Dr Chiu Yin-to, Ricky

Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, PHASE Scientific International Limited

Dr Chiu is a visionary scientist, entrepreneur, and industrialist. A rarity in the biotech field, he believes that in order for technologies to change the world, they must be used and commercialized so that the entire global community benefits. It is because of this belief that he is committed to leveraging the strengths of his upstream R&D efforts to support downstream development and manufacturing of disruptive products, giving a new meaning for what a successful industrialist can achieve.

Dr Chiu always goes above and beyond what he can accomplish, looking for innovative solutions to help with the world’s pressing health challenges. He developed a proprietary sample preparation technology while pursuing his Ph.D. in bioengineering at UCLA in the United States, which can concentrate target molecules by 10 to 100 times, making diagnostic tests easier, accessible, faster, more accurate and affordable.

The power of Dr Chiu’s technology has been showcased in the battle against COVID-19. During the outbreak in early 2020, he believed that diagnostics could help combat the pandemic, with his technology the right tool to do so. The desire to help the world spurred him to lead his team at PHASE Scientific to create a series of highly accurate diagnostic products, including the INDICAID COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test - a “Made by Hong Kong” success story.

The INDICAID COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test is first product of its kind in the Greater China region to obtain the US FDA emergency use authorization. The test also received global recognition from the world’s leading regulatory institutions. Highly accurate and effective for large scale population screening, it is an essential diagnostic tool to help limit the spread of COVID-19 disease.

In view of the surging COVID-19 cases in early 2022, Dr Chiu dramatically increased the production capacity of the INDICAID COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test by five-fold in less than two months to meet the world’s urgent needs. The “Made by Hong Kong” diagnostic tests have been exported to more than 30 countries to combat virus spread, demonstrating that they are of exceptional quality and can be just as influential as products manufactured by multinational companies in resolving global health crises.

Dr Chiu is dedicated to the advancement of Hong Kong’s industrial development. With manufacturing facilities operating in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, he utilizes Hong Kong's robust business environment, free markets, good quality assurance and control, as well as professional management talent while combining with Mainland China’s mass production capabilities and raw materials supply chains to optimize the outcomes of his “Made by Hong Kong” innovations.

Later this year, PHASE Scientific will be among the first tenants to move into the newly opened Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) in order to accelerate the research-to-industry process and improve its downstream manufacturing operations. By partnering with AMC, Dr Chiu has realized his promise of promoting the revival of local industries through the application of advanced manufacturing technologies.

It is Dr Chiu's vision to transform Hong Kong into an international innovation hub. Using his extensive network within the government, biotech, and medical sectors in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the United States, he will help nurture the next generation of biotech talent and foster the maturation of Hong Kong‘s biotech ecosystem. Also, he will continue to lead the PHASE Scientific team in innovating  smart and efficient manufacturing processes for the development of its medical diagnostic products, aiming to set a new gold standard for diagnostic quality, as well as to bring to life products that are innovated, designed, and manufactured in Hong Kong to benefit the world.

Judges’ Comments:
- Exemplary market acumen, develop novel diagnostic tools for cancer and infectious diseases with proprietary technologies

- Excellent achievement in biotechnology,

transforming R&D achievements for the benefit of the global community

Mr Kwong Hoi-fung, Eric

Managing Director, AluHouse International Trading Company Limited

Mr Eric Kwong, founder and managing director of AluHouse Co., Ltd. (“AluHouse”), is responsible for AluHouse’s strategic planning and operational management.

Mr Eric Kwong, founder and managing director of AluHouse Co., Ltd. (“AluHouse”), is responsible for AluHouse’s strategic planning and operational management.

Graduated from the University of Southern California in 2004, Mr Kwong soon joined the family business as the director of Asia Aluminum Group, where he gained rich experience in aluminum manufacturing and management of the company. In 2014, he established AluHouse Co. Ltd. in Hong Kong and set up a factory in Zhaoqing. AluHouse very quickly became an integral part of the Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) manufacturing industry and succeeded as one of the top suppliers of MiC components in the Hong Kong market.

Mr Kwong has made significant contributions to the business development and corporate transformation of AluHouse. In just seven years, he led the company to expand from a MiC business segment focusing only on low-rise aluminum structures to become the first diversified business company in the Greater Bay Area with a large-scale production capacity that incorporates three different materials for its MiC structures. Now AluHouse not only produces high-rise aluminum structure MiC, but also produces high-rise steel and concrete structure MiC, as well as aluminum alloy pedestrian bridges, aluminum home furnishings, and aluminum scaffolding.

The MiC products supplied by AluHouse are highly regarded by the HKSAR government and renown construction contractors. Some of the AluHouse projects that have been completed and are under construction in Hong Kong include Penny’s Bay Quarantine Centre Phase 1A, 2, 4, 5 & 6, Kai Tak the Cruise Terminal Community Isolation Centre, Au Pui Wan Primary School, Shek Wu Hui Water Purification Site Office, as well as the Hong Kong largest transitional housing projects at Kong Ha Wai, Luen Yan Street, Tsuen Wan, and Hung Shui Kiu.  Other innovative projects include a few long-span all-aluminum alloy pedestrian bridges in Zhuhai, Zhaoqing, and Foshan.  Despite the pandemic and in the midst of global uncertainty and challenges, AluHouse has maintained a net profit growth against the odds.

Mr Kwong continuously keeps a close watch on the development trends and market opportunities of the construction industry in Hong Kong.  He aims to help the Hong Kong government alleviate the housing shortage problem through the innovative products and technologies developed by AluHouse.  He led the team to develop a technology center and invested in the addition of automated production lines that build a complete production chain of aluminum, steel, and concrete MiC modules from in-depth research and design, prefabrication and assembly, packaging, and transportation, to on-site installation. The current annual production capacity of MiC modules developed by the company has expanded to over 100,000 units (about 1.6 million square meters) and the production cycle has been shortened to 10-15 days/unit.

Mr Kwong places great importance on scientific corporate governance and leading the company to a sustainable development path. AluHouse has been awarded the Hong Kong Sustainable Development Enterprise Award, the Hong Kong Quality Management Award, and the Hong Kong Sustainable Building Award. He was personally awarded the Hong Kong Sustainability Leadership Award for four consecutive years. As a young entrepreneur, he is keen to maintain interaction within the industry through different platforms. He constantly invites relevant personnel from the construction industry, university institutions, academic organizations, and government agencies in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to visit the factory in Zhaoqing to explore opportunities.

Mr Kwong is also committed to cultivating the new generation of management talents and technical personnel. He has long recruited young professionals from the Greater Bay Area to join AluHouse and encouraged the young generation to engage in the MiC industry through activities such as the establishment of scholarships and joint research and development between colleges and enterprises. He also actively supports and encourages employees to participate in the Caring Company and its volunteering activities. He has sponsored the Hong Kong Handicapped Golf Club, Mother's Choice, Foodlink, St. James's Settlement and other charities, serving the community.

Looking forward, Mr Kwong will continue the same approach of providing a more efficient, more environmental friendly, and better way of life for society through sustainable materials and innovative construction technology. This commitment to a strong corporate vision and mission continues to drive the company to innovate, develop, and maintain a leading technological position within the industry.
